Great Moments In Opera, "Parigi O Cara" From Verdi's "La Traviata"

By the start of the third act of Verdi's "La Traviata" we find Violeta in a hospital dying of tuberculosis though the name of her illness is never directly mentioned throughout the opera. It is at this point that Violeta has already spent most of her money and has even lost the lovely house she once lived in and is left with nothing but her faithful servant; who despite not being paid has not abandoned her. Violeta also has the good fortune in this, her last hour to still have Alfredo's love; who despite all that was between them was finally told the truth of why Violeta left him.
This making Alfredo see that it was but a wish of his father that made Violeta end their relationship and not a lack of love on her part; as he had originally believed it to be. Alfredo knowing that Violeta is close to death visits her at the hospital where he tells her how sorry he is regarding his recent behavior toward her. This while Violeta is only too happy to see him as she and him start to dream of perhaps the impossible as they sing "Parigi O Cara" with enthusiasm about how they will leave Paris and spend their lives together. It being Violeta and Rodolfo who even start to create lovely images of how her suffering will be rewarded and her health will bloom and their future will be bright yet both know deep down that it is but a fantasy which will never come true.
"Parigi O Cara" being an aria which combines the voices of a soprano and tenor in a lovely melody which though merry also contains a touch of sadness given what they both know will inevitably be. It being with sadness that I hear this aria as there is so much I wish could be different yet unfortunately I am all too aware that nothing will change. There however is also a certain joy in seeing Violeta and Alfredo spending their final moments together and being able to put their misunderstanding behind them. This as with all their adoration, they once again relive those moments which were so abundant before their breakup.
For my part, this is an aria which makes me romanticize as it brings to mind how life would have been for Violeta and Rodolfo if only she had not been sick and all the wonders that would have come from their lives; had they just been able to spend them together. It being Angela Gheorghiu, whom I always see playing Violeta in her dignified and proud fashion which includes all the romance and delicate ways of this perhaps fallen woman, who despite all her hardships; never lost her graceful ways. I even imagining to myself how Violeta is in so many ways like the real Angela Gheorghiu; who has such a splendor about her as to inspire so much desire.
My name is Gianni Truvianni, author of many an article to be found on the internet along with the book "New York's Opera Society". My works also include the books "What Should Not Matter", "Love Your Sister" and several others which still remain unpublished though I am presently looking to change this.
